Email no 11 - 3 October - Welcome to fixing up grand food

WELCOME DANIEL

Daniel Golding has joined the office to work on helping manage the mound of applications and keeping participants happy. All I know is that he's very tall at 6 foot 5 inches, he is not on Facebook and he is part of the same family as William Golding - of Lord of the Flies fame. A new model for Conference?

GRAND

Just to let you know we're over the 1,000 participant level - about a month ahead of recent years. We've got to keep encouraging friends and families to apply - take a look through the programme www.limmud.org/conference/programme and learn about a few presenters for yourself (the programminig team are always happy to talk about who the highlights will be).

FIXING IT

Early in the year Judy Trotter set us some challenges as part of a review into 'if it ain't broke'. On Monday she's reassembiing her team to consider how we're addressing the four challenges (below). Any thoughts? Let me know.

Challenge 1 - Loneliness

This really stood out as something that is important but very hard to admit personally.  In the midst of all the excitement and inspiration of Conference and of being on the team, we realised that at times it's too easy to get lonely.  It affects us all - volunteers, first time participants, old-timers and presenters - especially at mealtimes.  We decided that this is not acceptable.  Although Conference is about learning, we agreed that we have a responsibility not just to put on a programme but also to make sure we all can feel at home.

Challenge 2 - Volunteers

Let's spread the load, enjoy the year and not burn out.  We also need to remember that people volunteer for different reasons - to meet people, to put something back, to implement 'their' idea, to do something new.  And how do we make sure there are volunteers for the future?

Challenge 3 - Programming

This means thinking about pace, balance and what we get out of the programme.  Is it a 'personalised curriculum' or a series of 'sessions'?  How do we achieve political as well as religious balance?  What is the role of 'names'?  Should we change the type or quantity of sessions?

Challenge 4 - Young Limmud

We need to make it relevant to all year groups, create continuity and make YL and Conference understand each other better.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

After a terrific day inspecting Warwick's programmable ovens and automatic soup-making machines, yesterday we appointed Jason Millan to be our caterer - we're delighted to have him on board. He specialises in fine dining, though we will be working with the conference side of his business.
