Email no 6 - 20 July - Money, travel opportunities (including Manchester) and the application form is nearly ready to go
A quick round-up of news.
THE BUDGET has now been fully approved by Limmud Exec; it's a break-even budget broadly consistent with last year, but with a few tweaks to allow for the new site. Broadly we spend about £700k; the largest costs are site and catering (25-30% each) and subsidised places (15%, mainly for international presenters). If anyone wants to see the budget summary then let me know.
PRESENTERS - EARLY NEWS Want a peek at some of the early acceptances? It's by no means a full list yet, but it will grow all the time from now on. www.limmud.org/conference/programme/presenters07 At the moment this page is hidden from visitors to the site, but soon we're going to start using it to build some excitement and to generate applications.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES - VISIT SOUTH AFRICA AND ST LOUIS I'm pleased that despite the short notice, some volunteers took advantage of places at the Ways of Reading event at the British Library.
Look out for more volunteer opportunities that will be in an email from Elliott Goldstein next Monday. Amongst other events we're offering places to Limmuds in South Africa, and to CAJE in St Louis next month.
APPLICATIONS Excitement is growing here at Limmud Towers as we are very close now to publishing the brochure and the application form. Although we are of course producing a paper application form, we want to encourage people to go to the website to apply for Conference - so your help in spreading the message will be greatly appreciated.
WHILST WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE WEBSITE it's now changing regularly to reflect the detail of this year's Conference - so check it out at http://www.limmud.org/home/ As we get closer to December, the website will be the best way to keep up with the latest news (and let me know if you have ideas for content).
THE STEERING GROUP - KEEP IN TOUCH I'm delighted to announce that Miriam Shindler and Rebecca Lester - the co-chairs looking after participant care - have taken responsibility for 'families' under their wing. They take over from Norma Yantin, who is stepping down to spend more time with her own family (really is!) with the arrival of a new grandchild. I'm pleased that Norma will be helping out the Conference team in other ways.
Meanwhile Charles Darwish and Naomi Hass are adding to their volunteer responsibilities by running the YAD programme. YAD - as in the Hebrew word for hand - also stands for Young Adult Development Scheme, aimed at helping young people and students come to Conference for a reduced price in return for lending Conference a helping hand. Each year we seem to change the name of this programme; hopefully we'll find one that works for us all.
MANCHESTER THIS WEEKEND There's what we hope will be a terrific volunteers event going on in Manchester this Sunday. Whether you live nearby, are visting or want to pass this on to friends, it's a chance to find out more about Fest, Conference and all things Limmud - including plans for another Manchester Day Limmud. Whether you want to volunteer at one of these events or just want to come to say Hi, you'll be very welcome.
The Living Room (upstairs, in the Study), in Deansgate, Manchester, 2 to 4 pm Sunday 22 July. David Hoffman for more details - conf07-programming@limmud.org
