Email no 9 - 7 September - Rosh Hashana, walking in the rain, SEN at Conference, and a few batty quotes

QUICK ROUND-UP

Somehow Limmudfest managed to escape the summer rain, with 550 people soaking up the rays and the atmosphere in the Peak District. Conference was well represented, as many of us took our chance to be participants. Memories include Naomi Alderman (2006 Orange Award for New Writers), Esther Lapian (for a fix of poetry and text) and Socalled (klez-funk hip hop music freak Jewish cowboy - www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvVTCe5bnqk).

Oh, and 92 Fest participants even signed up to Conference while we were there. We're now at over 300.

BEIGEL MEETS BENGAL

Great turnout for the walking tour of Jewish Whitechapel. Started with a Jewish monument to the King, took in shuls past and present, places of refuge and business for Victorian prostitutes, Cable Street and the mural commemorating the moment when our parents and grandparents stood up and said Mosley could not pass. (One of our volunteer's dad was bound over in the sum of five shillings to keep the peace after the battle and he's very proud of that.) Ended at Brick Lane where the beigel (East End spelling) bakeries peer out from among the colourful Bengali restaurants.

LIMMUD FRIDGE MAGNETS AND WINDOW STICKERS

Limmud window stickers and magnets are on their way! They're only available to people who've applied for Conference. Fill in your own application form, and we'll put you on the waiting list. (For those who are unsure - volunteers need to apply on the same form as other participants at www.limmud.org/conference/form)

We're going to be spotting stickers on cars, in windows etc and giving rewards to those who display them. Want to be someone on the lookout or help with marketing in another way? Email Jerrold Bennett ( jerroldbennett[at]gmail.com ).

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AT CONFERENCE - NEW!

The Young Limmud Conference team are introducing a new programme for children with special educational needs. This is terrific. We're starting with 'friends and family' so if you know anyone aged between 7 and 16 who you think would love to join in, please get in touch with Jude Kay or Victoria Cohen - email young_limmud@hotmail.com.

Jude and Victoria are also looking for people to help with the SEN initiative - whether you've got experience or are interested in knowing more, then contact them.

STOP PRESS - PRESENTER UPDATE - www.limmud.org/conference/programme

Neshama Carlebach has just said yes. She's a fabulous musician and joins an outstanding entertainment programme including Yehuda Katz of Reva L'Sheva, GilRoy, Craig Taubman, Nephesh Theatre (who quoted us in the Jerusalem Post the other day), Emunah, Y-love and Ramon Tasat.

DATES

24 September - the price goes up! Don't dilly-dally. www.limmud.org/conference/form

28 October - Newcastle Day Limmud - speakers include Michelle Hanson (Guardian columnist and author), Paul Kriwaczek (author of "Yiddish Civilisation") and Shmuel ben-Tovim (economics minister at the Israeli embassy) - www.limmud.org/day/newcastle (and we'll also have a Conference stall there)

SWEET LIMMUD QUOTES FROM THE YEAR SO FAR

I remember I promised to write to you about Conference, but can't remember exactly why.

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is a complete nutter.  No. No.

By the way, he's up for cello playing, if we can get him a decent piano ...

When you say you posted an invite to him, do you mean in a letterbox? How quaint.

PS I don't want to presume, so is he your type? He was asking after you.

I knew the whole Limmud thing was a big mistake

Am working (notionally) at the moment

Q: But if there's little takeaway food, and no mealtimes ... how can lunch and learn work?

A: There are session times and there are meals. What's the problem?

Before we start planning our Limmud logo-ed hamsters etc we have some questions.

SHANA TOVA U'METUKA

Wishing you and those around you a good and sweet year.
