The following popular events will be happening at Conference 2007, so if you want to be sure of a place, read on - then follow the links to sign up in advance.
While refundable deposits may be required to reserve your place, there are no charges for any of the trips (except for further adults to the kids' theatre), but should be pre-booked.
We are thrilled to be able to offer free tickets to children between the ages of 2-7 to see the acclaimed play If all the World were Paper at the Warwick Arts Centre on Sunday 23 December from 4pm.
Reception to Year 2 children will be automatically taken to see the play as part of the Young Limmud Conference programme. However, we would also like to offer tickets to those parents of children in creche and Young Limmud Minors (ages 2-4). One adult can attend free of charge per child and tickets for further adults will cost £8.50.
If all the World were Paper is a highly interactive, multi-sensory show, taking its inspiration from the traditional nursery rhyme. It is touring nationally and has been devised by Oily Cart who have an international reputation for performing very high quality children's shows. Original music is sung and played live on stage with the use of puppets and plenty of non-threatening audience interaction. It is an opportunity for children of 2-7 years, plus their parents, to enjoy a show together and it lasts 55 minutes.
For more information see the production website: http://www.oilycart.org.uk/early_years/current/
You can also buy the CD of the show via the website to play in advance!
Reviews:
"With the absolutely enchanting show If all the World were Paper, they provide a veritable masterclass in theatre production for kids aged two to five...By the time the cast is singing goodbye in various languages, one is quite bowled over by this most accomplished of children's productions." - Mark Brown, Sunday Herald
"It's a brilliant show taking us away into imagination and suggestion. It transports children and adults alike with its loving humour and invention." - Thelma Good, The Edinburgh Guide
Please submit your details here if you would like two free tickets for the play (one child aged 2-4 years plus one adult). Further adults can attend at the cost of £8.50 each. Tickets will be distributed at Limmud Conference - please do not purchase tickets through the box office.
Tikkun Limmud in the Community
This year's Tikkun Limmud in the Community will be helping out at two very worthwhile projects in Coventry.
The Grub 'n' Gab Club provides company and a hot lunch for homeless and lonely people in the city centre of Coventry every Saturday. The organisation is entirely run by volunteers and subsists on donated food and cash from the general public, local companies and other organizations.
For 5 days and nights over the Xmas period, Grub 'n' Gab also provides night shelter and meal facilities for homeless people in Coventry. The night shelter has no permanent base, using church halls if available, and is a massive logistical operation. We'll be helping to put it all together. Shifts are ordinarily for 3 hours and volunteers will help with meal preparation and serving, tidying and organising, and taking in and sorting donations. There are also shifts at the nightshelter overnight. Do sign up if you'd be interested.
The second project is the Coventry Xmas Day Dinner: on Wednesday 25th December, all the homeless organisations in Coventry join together to provide Xmas dinner for up to 370 people. Help may be needed with set-up and take-down, serving and simply chatting to guests. They will welcome anyone who wants to help out - even if it's just to sit in company with those who may be lonely and away from their families at this time. If you are interested, please sign up here.
Sign up your skills to the Tzedakah Silent Auction
This year at Conference we will be running a silent auction to allow people to donate, and bid on, all sorts of skills that the Conference Community have. The auction will launch at Conference but we would love you to donate your skills in advance.
We now have a list of skills that have been donated so far - follow this link to find out more.
Please get in touch to let us know what you can contribute (a challah making lesson, an Israeli dance class, a crash course in computers, a spring clean of someone's house....). No skill is too silly or niche!
This year we are supporting the following charities;
Beth Shalom (http://www.bethshalom.com/)
UJIA (http://www.ujia.org/)
Yad Eliezer (http://www.yadeliezer.org/site/home.php)
Chai Cancer Care (http://www.chaicancercare.org/about_chai)
Bone Marrow Screening with The Anthony Nolan Trust
On Monday 24th December The Anthony Nolan Trust will be holding a donor recruitment session from 11.00-15.00. Anthony Nolan provide donors for patients in need of a bone marrow transplant - see www.anthonynolan.org.uk for more information.
This is your opportunity to sign up to the bone marrow register and potentially save a life from leukaemia or similar illness. You must be aged between 18 - 40.
You may not know this, but patients who need transplants are more likely to find a compatible donor within their own ethnic community. The more people that sign up, the more likely it is that a match will be found. Please drop in to this session to find out more or register in advance by signing up here.
Visit to Beth Shalom
Please note this event is now fully booked. It is not now possible to sign up. If places become available they will be advertised at Conference.
This year, we are excited to offer all our participants a full day's trip to Beth Shalom, Nottingham which houses both the UK Holocaust Centre as well as the Aegis Trust. It is a Limmud day trip, off site with a fantastic range of sessions and speakers including Peter Geffen (Director of the Centre for Jewish History, formerly worked for Martin Luther King as a civil rights activist), Ruth Messinger (President of the American Jewish World Service, an international development agency, leading the campaign about Darfur), James Smith (who, together with his brother Stephen founded Beth Shalom. James is also the founder and Chief Executive of the Aegis Trust.), and Efraim Zuroff (Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre's Israeli Office).
As you would expect it will be a packed day with an introduction talk on how and why Beth Shalom was set up on the coach to the centre, followed by plenty of time to walk round the Holocaust exhibition, and after lunch a panel discussion on Darfur and a session with James Smith and a survivor of the Holocaust. A full agenda will be given on the day.
We will leave at 09.30 on Monday 24th December and get back to campus in time for evening entertainment at around 18.00 and yes we will be providing a packed lunch!
Athough the trip is being sponsored, we ask for a £20 refundable deposit to confirm your place as places are very limited and will work on a first come, first served basis. Once you have signed up to show your interest, you will be contacted to arrange paying the deposit.
Please note that children are encouraged not to join this trip as there is a busy programme of Young Limmud Conference sessions. In addition the Beth Shalom Centre's exhibitions and films are not recommended for children under 12. Parents or carers wishing to bring younger children may do so at their own discretion.
Following last year's success of "Scratch Joseph" a second scratch musical will feature at this year's conference.
The show will be Fiddler on the Roof. We will be putting this on from scratch at conference. We will need people to help in many different capacities including: directing, choreographing, singing, acting, dancing, props, costumes, audio visuals and musicians (particularly a violinist). Auditions will take place on the Sunday evening at the beginning of Conference. If you would like to get involved please sign up now!
Please note that Young Limmud Conference participants will not be able to be fully involved in this activity as they have a busy programme of sessions. However if you wish to send us your details we will let you know if you can help with any part of the production!
