Scotland Day Limmud, on Sunday 14th February at Hutchesons’ Grammar School, will have a fantastically varied programme with over 50 sessions. The presenters come from far and wide, from the USA to Israel, but a great number of them are local talent.
There’s Scotland’s foremost voice coach, Ros Steen, who will be offering a physical, practical session on the body and voice, with Shosh Greenberg, a Limmud Scotland regular, teaching Israeli dancing – traditional and modern - and if you’d like to get even more physical, you can try Krav Maga (Israeli-style self-defence) with Yossi Flint.
For a more restful session, you could join BBC producer David Ian Neville to explore imaginative ways in which you can use your own family and personal memories as inspiration for creative writing, or try calligraphy for yourself with Richard Elliot and Samantha Hamilton, focusing on the stylistic writing of the Torah. Then again, Heather Valencia is offering a fun session on Yiddish for beginners, while Michael Tobias will provide an overview of the JewishGen website and Sharon Barron, who recently left Glasgow to settle in London, will share insights into the making of her book, A Caring Community.
There’s an appealing session on offer from Danny Bergson, Rabbi of Newton Mearns Synagogue, entitled Madonna and Kabbalah, or you could take the opportunity to see the Candid Theatre Company, a group of non-Jewish youngsters from Larkhall, led by Laura Barnes, who will present a moving session on the topic of their recent visit to Auschwitz.
David Capitanchik and Ellen Goldberg will give you food for thought with their views on Israel, while Antony Silkoff, a Glasgow University student, will lead a session on One Voice, an organisation dedicated to reconciling the views of Israelis and Palestinians. The local line-up will be completed with the participation of lawyers David Goldberg, Stephen Cowan and Peter Watson; the Rabbi of Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation, David Rose; and award-winning journalist Bob Tomlinson.
On top of all this, the programme provides a showcase for top educators from the rest of the UK as well as from the USA and Israel. Look out for details in the coming weeks!
