Limmud in the UK: How we work

In June 2020, we undertook a structural review of the global network of Limmud communities and Limmud in the UK. The goal was to determine the best structure for the organisation to ensure it would be effective and sustainable in the coming years.

The scope of the review included:

• The relationship between Limmud in the UK and Limmud communities around the world
• The governance and management of Limmud events and activities in the UK

After speaking with over 100 Limmud volunteers, professionals, supporters and partners from around the world, the recommendations were presented to the Global Board and Trustee Board in October 2020. Both the Global Board and Trustee Board agreed to accept the recommendations of the review and implement the structural changes and processes described in the report.

For UK operations the key conclusion of the report which has been accepted is:

• To establish a new global Limmud entity, therefore leaving Limmud in the UK to be its own separate entity. Limmud in the UK would be involved in the global entity alongside all other global Limmud communities.

The recommendations for the UK structure were:

• On-going operations and the short to mid-term strategic planning process should be held by an ‘Executive’ group of volunteers. This would include responsibility for planning, budgeting and operations of all Limmud activities in the UK.
• The Executive will be accountable to the Trustee Board who are responsible for governance, stewardship and long-term strategy. The Trustee Board will act as ‘Critical Friends’ to the Executive.
• The Executive and Trustee Board should work together with a culture of collaboration, engagement, mentoring and support.

The Trustee Board is the governing body of Limmud in the UK. The Trustee Board is responsible for the governance, stewardship and long-term strategy of the organisation, and have ultimate decision-making authority. The Trustee Board constitutes the formal legal entity of the organisation.

The Trustee Board will be involved in the appointment of the Executive Committee Co-Chairs, who will go on to recruit their committee.

The Executive Committee is responsible for the day-to-day operational responsibilities of the organisation. The Executive Committee provides support for and oversight of all UK events, projects and volunteers.

The Trustee Board is responsible for fundraising, approval of the annual budget as presented by the Executive Committee, managing organisational risks including HR and legal issues, and ensure the organisation is fulfilling its aims and objectives in a sustainable manner.
