An Evening with Limmud Manchester
13 June @ 19:00 – 21:00
An inspiring evening exploring connections between Judaism and the world of music. This Limmud Manchester evening event promises to be thought-provoking and uplifting.
Don’t miss out, book your ticket for just £5 per adult, with child and concessionary rates available. See ticket breakdown below.
Music on the move:
In this talk, Daniel Mawson and Richard Fay from the Music Department at The University of Manchester will focus on one tune in particular to explore some of klezmer’s journeys (across time and space)
and transformations (in function, performance, etc). This exploration will conclude with their own journeys as co-directors of the university’s klezmer ensemble and members of the wider klezmer-playing community in and around Manchester.
Cool, hot and sweet:
David Cutler will illustrate the longstanding connection between jazz music and Jewish people through playing, supporting, managing, promoting and championing jazz. As strangers in a strange land, Jews and Black Americans shared a common fight for social justice.
David will examine, how based on this mutual experience, jazz shaped America’s greatest contribution to 20th Century art.
Soft and Soothing:
Theo Travis the internationally renowned jazz/rock musician and composer Theo Travis will be talking about his journey from Synagogue choir member to life on the road and what it means to be a professional British jazz musician today.
He will tell of how his Judaism informs and has influenced all aspects of his music, the possible conflicts of this lifestyle and will be considering whether there is a Jewish soul in music.
We are delighted to be joined by long-term Limmudnik and Head of Adult Education & Learning at JW3, Judy Trotter, who will chair our evening
