Our Programme
We’ve got three fantastic presenters, each doing a short, topical session. They are:
Louise Ellman DBE, was Leader of Lancashire County Council 1981-1997 and Labour/Co-operative MP for Liverpool Riverside 1997-2019. She resigned in November 2019 after 55 years membership of the Labour Party because of Labour’s antisemitism, stating that Jeremy Corbyn was not fit to be PM. In parliament she chaired the Transport Select Committee, Labour Friends of Israel and the all-party group on the B’hai faith. Louise is currently President of the Jewish Labour Movement.
Session Title: ‘What do recent issues with the Labour party say about the future of British Jews?’
Clive Lawton, one of the founders of Limmud and for many years its director and then Senior Consultant, is CEO of the Commonwealth Jewish Council Scholar-in-residence at JW3, of which he was a founding trustee, a presiding magistrate on the Bristol Bench, an NHS Independent tribunal Chair, a writer and broadcaster. Earlier this year, he chaired the Wingate Jewish Book prize panel. He has four degrees in diverse subjects, has been a High school Head, Deputy Director of an LEA, Chair of an NHS hospital Board,an independent member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, an A level Chief Examiner in Religious Studies and has published over a dozen books.
Session Title: ‘Jewish timescales – the next 200 years’
Robyn Ashworth-Steen is one of the rabbis at Manchester Reform Synagogue in the city centre. Formerly a human rights lawyer, Rabbi Robyn is committed to social justice and building up communities through learning Torah and deepening relationships to help work towards a healed world. She is co-chair of Greater Manchester Citizens (a broad-based organising charity), co-founder of Tzelem: The Rabbinic Call for Social and Economic Justice in the UK and part of the One Love Chaplaincy team at the Manchester Universities. She is a proud Mancunian, lover of sci-fi, mum to an energetic 7 year old and a loving cat!
